ZAC HENDERSON

 Zac is a second generation skimboarder, the son of legendary Chris ‘Hende’ Henderson.

His board of choice is a modified La Cucaracha, which he uses everywhere from pounding Aliso to small days at Thalia Street.

Zac is one of the most notable up and coming skimboarders in Laguna right now, ranking #4 in the 2023 United Skim Tour standings.

Having grown up in South Laguna, he’s most drawn to wedges, whether it’s Aliso, 10th Street, or up north in Newport at The Wedge.

When asked about his board modifications, this is what Zac had to say;

“I loved the bat-tail / swallow tail, but the Concave-Cucaracha seems to work for everything. The swallow tail likes to hold a certain rail line once you’re on your board. You can feel the board kind of ‘lock in’ with the back rail, making it easier to handle on a sider or liner. This board produces the most speed once on a wave, but I would only prefer to use it on a sider rather than wraps.”

“The Concave-Cucaracha is my favorite board at the moment. The width of the Cucaracha makes for long glides, and the concave deck gives it a ‘skateboard’ feeling once you step onto it. This board is my favorite even without the concave because of how much board you have to work with when it comes to landing tricks and airs… or even getting the most glide out of your attempt.

Concave on the skimboard has its pros and cons. In order to make the concave, a large chunk of foam is taken out of the middle of the board, making it lose a little glide and strength. That being said, it does give you the ability to go rail-to-rail faster, and lets you land tricks easier with the feeling that you’re ‘locked in’ or ‘landing bolts’ to the shape of the concave.

What I’m currently working on is bettering my placement in the United Skim Tour for 2024, and always trying to make some friends and videos along the way.”

CHANCE GAUL

These days you can find Chance at the Palm Springs Surf Club welcoming in a new era of wave pool magic.

When he’s not on the clock in Palm Springs, Chance can often be found at Brooks Street in Laguna, fine tuning his airs. Incredibly talented on both a surfboard and a skim, Chance is a double threat.

ETHAN REDEFER

Ethan hails from Dewey Beach, Delaware, giving him an automatic preference for the classic liners of his home break. The Redefer family is deeply imbedded in skimboarding culture, and his father has been a huge inspiration in his career, teaching him everything he knows about the sport. This is what Ethan had to say about his quiver; “My favorite board is the La Cucaracha. It’s the fastest thing I’ve ever ridden. I also have a couple Halibut shapes which are super fun for the classic Dewey lines.”

INDY BRYAN

Son of iconic skimboarder, Bill ‘Beaker’ Bryan, Indy is one of the best groms in the water right now. Indy likes to say he ‘grew up on a permanent skim trip’ thanks to his dad’s wave wisdom and ability to follow the swells wherever they led them.

“I love skimming new spots but am what you would call a ‘sidewave geek’. Nothing beats the crystal clear sider at 10th Street.”

Here’s what he had to say about his weapon of choice;

“Since my first custom with Paul (when I was 5), I’ve always come back to the pro shape. I’ve ridden it for so long… it feels so comfortable under my feet. I did ride the Bat Tail, and it was amazing for siders and really feels like you’re locked in, but had its downside for tech.”

Indy’s tech is varied, some of his tricks of choice being a 360 indy grab, a bigspin on a frontside liner, and a switch three shuv. His main focus right now is on landing a clean kickflip on his skim. He said seeing skimmers from different countries pushing the limits has him super inspired.

SKYLAR WILSON

Skylar grew up in Delaware primarily skimming frontside liners. Since moving out to California she has established herself as a go-to videographer and editor in the skimboarding world, and spends most of her time traveling and shooting with professional skimmers and surfers.

Skylar tends to opt for more playful conditions, which means spending a lot of time in town at Thalia Street or at the 10th Street secondary. Growing up, you could find her at Gordons Pond nearly any day of the week.

After a decade riding various sizes of the Pro Shape, she has recently switched over to the Irukaundji. Its blunt, eggy shape and cruisy style lends itself to smaller days in town, making it the perfect tool for her lazy approach to skimboarding.
